The rumor mill has been spinning today. The newest news is that Apple may be contemplating the purchase of ARM. This may be wildly inaccurate but my initial gut instinct, is the utter devastation that this would be causing on the technical landscape of: Tablet computing, mobile phone computing, netbooks and other various web enabled (smart) appliances. Imagine a comparison of Microsoft buying Intel back in 1999. This would be along the same level of severity. Sure AMD wold stand to gain a lot but the entire ecosystem of PC manufacturing would be incredibly disrupted for years to come as it sought a way to re balance itself.

I have a suspicion that the mobile computing arena in which ARM is the king, might eventually overtake the PC world in volume and importance. If Apple is considering this move and this is more than just a rumor, it crystallizes what should have been very obvious to many by now. That Apple has an ecosystem that is ripe with lock in (in much the same manner as Sony in the past). On the upside it does illustrate one thing quite clearly. Android is a serious and perceived competitor and this is a defensive move to control the landscape of their approaching battlefield.

This could altogether be misconstrued, and perhaps Apple is seeking to buy ARM Holdings, which licenses the IP of ARM and its intellectual property. This still would manipulate the environment of the mobile computing race enough tot tilt it even more so in the favor of the Jobsian iPhone. I do not want this either.
